ADVICE FROM THE PROS Your
game is only as good as your second serve. When
you hit big second-serve returns you place a seed of worry in the opponent's
head - that often leads to double fault. The
most important skill in tennis is timing. Timing,
not body size, is the key to power. Think
in terms of four to six ball rallies. Make the opponent run corner to
corner. Do it for three points in a row and the opponent will be baked
for good. When
you lose your rhythm serving, it's because of a lack of concentration. You
must identify your strengths and use them. It
boils down to watching the ball and executing. I
became a devotee of road work when I was young. I became convinced that
the most useful form of running is a series of fifteen yards jogging
and thirty yards sprinting. My
father's coaching philosophy when working with me was to be patient,
be steady, let your opponent make the mistake. The player with the least
errors will win the match. Being
a good server is more than aces. It's placement, spin patterns and first-serve
percentile. There's
always more to learn in this game, no matter how long you've been playing. |
